Jonathan has been running this route for 18 years
There are stops he only takes the charter groups to. The shallow cave where the light hits the water from below and the whole pool glows turquoise. The swimming spot with the natural rock ledge that works as a diving platform. The back entrance to the Blue Lagoon where you approach from the quiet side while everyone else fights for space at the front. He knows all of it because he's been doing this since before most of the other operators existed.
The three hours
Jonathan pulls away from the Hondoq jetty and asks you one question: 'Fast and see everything, or slow and swim a lot?' Most people say both.
First stop is the cave corridor along the Comino south coast. He idles through each entrance so you can see inside. Some are narrow and the engine echoes off the walls. Some open into cathedral-sized chambers where the water glows from the sand below.
Second stop is the swimming bay he doesn't show the shuttle passengers. The water is chest-deep over white sand. There's a natural ledge at waist height where you can sit. He drops the anchor and opens the ladder. You swim. You float. Someone jumps off the boat.
Third stop is the Blue Lagoon. But not the side where the catamarans anchor and the music plays. Jonathan takes you to the back entrance between the rocks, where the water is just as clear but the only sounds are yours.
On the way back he follows the Gozo coastline. The cliffs change color in the afternoon light. He points out a window in the rock where you can see through to the other side. The boat idles into Hondoq and the three hours feel like they took twenty minutes.
€300 sounds like a lot. Then you do the math.
€300 for up to 8 people. That's €37.50 each for 3 hours with your own captain, every cave and hidden bay between two islands, fuel included, and a route that takes 18 years to learn. For comparison, a catamaran group tour from Cirkewwa costs €55 per person and you're one of 80.

We've done boat trips in Croatia, Greece, Thailand. This was the best one. Jonathan knew exactly where to go and when to stop. The hidden bay with the rock ledge was the highlight of our two-week holiday.

Eight of us for my 40th birthday. €37.50 each. Jonathan played our playlist, found us a private bay, and took the photo that's now framed in my kitchen. You can't put a price on that.
